What is Autism?
Oct 07, 2021Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disability that is typically diagnosed at a young age. It sticks with someone their entire life and can provide challenges to a person’s social skills and behaviors. It’s estimated that 1 in 54 individuals are on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, and it is more frequent in boys than girls. While it is a fairly common disorder, people seem to not know a whole lot about what autism is. In helping to support autism awareness, we’ve put together some information to answer the question “What is Autism?”
Diagnosis of ASD
Autism spectrum disorder can be difficult to diagnose since there is no medical test to see if someone is on the spectrum. A doctor has to watch an individual’s behavior to be able to diagnose them. Autism can usually be identified early in life, with diagnoses being considered reliable around the age of two. However, diagnosis can be difficult since autism has so many varied characteristics. Undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder can make it difficult for someone to get proper help. Early signs of autism spectrum disorder should be watched for. Also, watching out for important milestones in a child’s development helps make sure ASD doesn’t go unnoticed.
Characteristics of Autism
The symptoms of autism spectrum disorder are many. However, they can usually be put into two categories, social interaction/communication problems, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. Autism spectrum disorder affects the brain in such a way that social interaction can be difficult. Someone with autism spectrum disorder may find difficulties in communicating and interacting with other people. They may also struggle with understanding how others feel. An individual with autism spectrum disorder may also respond extremely to different sensory effects. Things like loud noises, bright, flashing lights, or even the way specific things feel may make them stressed or uncomfortable. Another typical characteristic is doing the same thing repeatedly. Things like playing with the same part of a toy, or being incredibly interested in one niche thing can also be a symptom.
ASD is not an Illness
One of the most important things to know about autism spectrum disorder is that it isn’t an illness. Someone with autism spectrum disorder has a brain that works differently compared to others. It typically occurs during childhood and doesn’t ever go away. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder just need support and love from those around them. It’s not clear what causes autism, but it isn’t something that you need to worry about. The most important thing you can do is try to understand and support those around you.
