Roofing for Pools Patios and Outdoor Spaces

Summer is almost here! Spending time outdoors is a perfect way to celebrate the warm weather. However, you’ll eventually need a break from the sun. Having roofing for your pool, patio, or other outdoor space is a great way to extend the time you can spend outside. There are quite a few options available for outdoor roofing. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar is going to help by explaining the various types of roofing for outdoor spaces.

Patio Styles

The first thing to consider when deciding what type of outdoor roofing you want is style. You have to choose if you want a free-standing structure or an add-on to your home. Styling your outdoor roofing like your home, using the same materials even, is a very popular option. However, you can also change up the style to have the area stand out. Another good thing to keep in mind is your outdoor area as a whole. If you have a pool or want one it could benefit you to keep the pool in consideration. Blending your home’s style with your pool’s style ties your outdoor living space together.

Two of the most popular roofing types for both free-standing and add-on outdoor areas are latticing and solid roofing. Lattice roofing is made up of joints and rafters for shade. This does leave gaps for sunlight, giving a stylish option, while still allowing some sunlight. One thing to consider is that weather does have the ability to come through lattice roofing, however, so it doesn’t give absolute protection. Solid roofing is like the roof on your home. Since it is one, gapless, structure it offers more protection against the weather, as well as more shade. However, some people don’t like the look of a solid roof over their patio or prefer an option that doesn’t block the view of the stars at night.

Materials

The material you choose is most important if you’re straying away from the style of your home’s roof. There are three main materials used in roofing for outdoor spaces, all of which have pros and cons.

Wood

Wood is a classic option for an outdoor area’s roofing. It brings an aesthetically pleasing, natural look to any space. Wood also comes in many colors and textures giving you a wide range of options. One of the biggest strengths of wood is its strength! Wood can hold heavier items than aluminum and vinyl, perfect for bird feeders, potted plants, and other medium-weight items. However, wood isn’t perfect. Wooden outdoor structures will most likely need to be resealed or repainted regularly to ensure longevity. Wood is also susceptible to sun damage and can become cracked, or warped.

Aluminum

Another excellent option for your outdoor roofing is aluminum. Aluminum is strong and long-lasting and the sun doesn’t affect it. Aluminum also comes in a wide array of styles to choose from and offers a more modern look. It’s lightweight and isn’t susceptible to termites, mold, rot, or rust. Aluminum requires very little maintenance and can be easily cleaned with some water and a sponge. Aluminum does however take damage from hail. Some people also prefer the look of other materials to aluminum.

Vinyl

Vinyl is another popular material for roofing for outdoor spaces. It comes in many colors, and its lightweight and low maintenance like aluminum. However, vinyl is generally cheaper than aluminum. Good vinyl won’t peel or rot. However, most people don’t like the look of vinyl because colors for vinyl tend to be limited, and painting isn’t usually an option. Worst of all, vinyl is highly susceptible to discoloration by the sun’s UV rays.
