Why is Roof Ventilation Important?

Why is Roof Ventilation Important?

Keeping your roof in working order is critical when it comes to maintaining your home. Roofing ventilation is an important part of your home. Without proper airflow, your house can run into a variety of problems. But what exactly is roofing ventilation, and why is it so important? Honey Bees Roofing & Solar has the answers! What is Roof Ventilation? Roofing ventilation, also known as attic ventilation, is a series of intake and outtake vents. They allow airflow between the outside world and the attic itself. The vents themselves are put into the roof and make sure that hot air doesn’t get trapped inside the attic. Without them, the roof will trap air inside and cause a plethora of problems to your home. Why is Roof Ventilation Important? A lack of proper ventilation can cause heat and moisture to get stuck inside of your home. That causes serious problems to the home. These problems vary depending on the weather and climate of your area. However, they are all predictable. When it’s hot outside and the sun beats down on your roofing, it begins to heat up. The excess heat will age the shingles, which makes your roof’s lifespan significantly shorter. It also will warp the sheathing of your roof. The trapped heat will also make your energy bills go up, as it will become harder to keep the home cool. In cold weather, improper roofing ventilation is a major cause of ice dams. Humidity also gets stuck without roofing ventilation, which is a problem in already humid environments. Not only can the humidity damage the components of your attic, but it can also start the growth of mold. Improper attic ventilation can ruin important parts of your roof. What are the Signs of Improper Ventilation? There are many ways that improper ventilation can manifest, so if you see any of these signs it may be a good idea to get a roof inspection. With a roof inspection, a local roofer will be able to determine if your ventilation is working properly. Keep an eye on your heating and cooling bills. If moisture is trapped and damages your attic insulation, your home will struggle to keep its temperature. If your HVAC system is failing more consistently, it might be from the strain of additional workload. Ice dams during the winter months are a sure sign of improper attic ventilation. Warping of your roofline from the excess heat. Signs of water damage in your attics, like rust, dampness, water stains, or frost can all be evidence of additional moisture Call a Professional If you need better roofing ventilation in your home then Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! A New Nailable Solar Shingle

A New Nailable Solar Shingle

Solar is an amazing investment for many homes. The ability to make your own energy, straight from the sun, can help lower electricity bills and help the planet. Plus, utilizing the sun for power is still a growing industry with up-and-coming innovations. One such innovation was revealed recently from GAF Energy. First launched at CES 2022,  GAF Energy now has a nailable solar shingle. Known as Timberline Solar, this new roofing has many benefits and points towards exciting new products over the horizon for utilizing the sun. What is a Solar Shingle? While most people know what solar panels are, you may not know exactly what a solar shingle is. These special panels go up on your roof with your normal shingles, but they have additional benefits. Not only do they protect your roofing from the weather, but they also collect energy from the sun and put it directly into your home. One benefit of this solar roofing is its ability to look similar to the normal shingles on your roof. Since they fit in with asphalt roofs, these special shingles are less of an eyesore, unlike traditional solar panels. A Nailable Solar Shingle? Solar shingles can be a pain to install, and most of their cost comes from the difficult installation. That’s why this new option from GAF Energy is such an exciting prospect. The ability to nail the shingles on makes installing them nearly as easy as installing the rest of the roofing. In fact, it should make solar far more accessible, as the installation cost should be much less. While it’s a fairly new product, it may be a sign of similar shingles becoming available. As solar gets easier to install, more people will have an interest in utilizing the sun for their home’s power. Good Solar and a Good Shingle Timberline shingles are good for roofing and are good solar collectors. As roofing, they shed water and can withstand wind up to 130 mph. They also fit right in along with their normal shingle line, which prevents the solar system from lowering curb appeal. These panels give you a normal-looking roof and add the ability to use the sun as energy. The ability to nail them onto your roof like normal roofing means that they can be put up quickly and easily. Learn More About Solar With all the recent innovations, you’ll want to keep an eye on solar energy. Many homeowners can benefit from it, as sun power not only lowers your electric bill but also helps the environment. It’s a worthwhile investment for any household. If you are interested in getting solar power on your home, or a no-pressure educational conversation about solar power, contact us! Roofing Issues To Look Out For in a New Home

Roofing Issues To Look Out For in a New Home

Buying a house is a lengthy process, and there is a large variety of things that you have to look out for. Inspecting the roof of your possible new home is critically important. If you buy a house and there’s something wrong with the roofing then it’ll have to get fixed. Even if you don’t end up having to pay for it, it takes up valuable time you could use to settle in. Luckily, Honey Bees Roofing & Solar has put together a list of roofing issues to look out for in a new home. How Old is the Roof? One of the first things you should determine is the age of the roof. It should be pretty simple to find out, since asking “how old is the roof” is pretty common. Their answer, along with the materials it’s made of, should let you know if the roof will need replacing soon. New roofing is obviously better, but if it is old just be ready to replace it sooner rather than later. Are There Clear Signs of Wear? If the roof isn’t too old but has clear signs of wear and tears you may still need serious work done on the roof. It’s best to have a roofing contractor inspect the roof so you’ll be sure you can’t overlook anything. For shingle roofing, look for granules around the ground under the roof. That’s proof the shingles are in need of replacement. Also, look for curling and missing shingles, as you’ll want to replace those as soon as possible. Is the Drainage System in Good Condition? Typically, a roof’s drainage system is just gutters. However, missing gutters or gutters that have been damaged can be a serious problem. Another problem is gutters that don’t drain properly. A house needs working gutters to prevent water damage to the roofing itself. Gutters need to be in good shape, in proper locations, and draining properly. Are There Any Signs Of Leaks? If there are leaks in the roof, that’s a bad sign! You’ll definitely want a roofer to come to look at it to see how extensive the damage is. If the leak has been around for a while, then the inside of the roofing could have extreme damage, and even be rotting! However, a leak may not be obvious. Keep an eye out for any water damage on the ceiling or walls, as that can be a telling sign that there is a leak. Call a Professional If you need help inspecting roofing issues to look out for in a new home or need new roofing for the house you’re considering to purchase, Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! Is Metal Roofing More Noisy Than Shingle Roofing?
Asphalt Shingles, Metal Roofing, Roofing

Is Metal Roofing More Noisy Than Shingle Roofing?

There are many types of roofing options for the modern homeowner. While the most popular choice is asphalt shingles, metal roofing is quickly growing in demand. More and more people are replacing their shingles with metal. However, it’s important to keep in mind all the pros and cons before you make the switch. Metal is notorious for being loud during storms. But is metal roofing actually more noisy than shingle roofing? Luckily, Honey Bees Roofing & Solar has all the information you need. Benefits of Metal Roofing Metal roofing has many benefits, and we’ve put together the main ones below. Long-Lasting and Durable Metal roofing is one of the most long-lasting roofing options available. In fact, it can last between 40 and 70 years in Burleson. On top of the natural lifespan, many manufacturers offer a 30-50 year warranty on it.  That, paired with the strength of the metal itself, gives the homeowner a roof that requires minimal maintenance and lasts for years. Ecofriendly Metal roofing is incredibly energy efficient. Its natural reflectiveness can be amplified by additional coatings to help your home avoid heating up from the sun’s rays. You’ll keep your home cooler and save money on your energy bill. That goes hand in hand with metal roofing’s ability to be essentially recycled infinitely. Years after your roofing is no longer functional the metal can be reused, possibly for another roof! That means that metal roofing is incredibly environmentally friendly, and goes perfectly with a solar panel system. What Will You Hear When Weather Hits? Is metal noisier than shingles? The answer is more nuanced than you might think. A standard metal roof will be significantly louder than one made of asphalt shingles. A normal metal roof during a storm is about 52 decibels, compared to asphalt shingles which are about 46 decibels. 52 decibels is similar to the noise of a hairdryer, which is quite noisy. However, that’s not the end of the story. You can have insulation installed that can nearly cut the decibels in half! It depends on what you’re looking for from your roof, as some people consider the noise the roof makes a pro for metal roofing. Call a Professional Metal roofing and shingle roofing both have pros and cons, but in the end, metal roofing typically is more noisy than shingle roofing. However, it can actually be assisted with insulation if the noise would bother you greatly. If you need help inspecting roofing issues to look out for in a new home or need new roofing for the house you just bought, Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! What Qualifications Should a Roofer Have?
Roofing, Roofing Contractor

What Qualifications Should a Roofer Have?

Your roof is one of the most important aspects of your home. It protects you, your loved ones, and your prized possessions. That’s why it’s so important to pick the right roofing contractor. We’ve already gone over signs of roofing scams, so today we’re going over signs of a responsible and trustable roofing contractor. But what qualifications should a roofer have? There are tons of ways to determine if a roofer is legit and we’ve put together some of the most important things to check. Industry Experience One major qualification that is incredibly important in the roofing industry is actual industry experience. A qualified roofer should have proof of their excellent work. Things like reviews are good, but there’s another thing to check. Many experienced roofers will have pictures of previous jobs available to look at. They also will have references that can verify their quality of work. Being able to back up roofing experience with actual projects is a big deal. An Established Place of Business Many unqualified roofers won’t even have an office or other place of business. Established roofers will have a building that they use for their business, and they’ll typically have the address on their site. While a roofer should have an address to contact, they might not. In these cases, you may have found an unqualified roofer. It’s even possible you’ve found a scammer. Many “roofers” that are trying to scam you won’t have an address so you can’t find them after the job. Always make sure the roofer you’re looking at has a place of business before you choose them. Roofing Contractors Association Accreditation Many states have different laws when it comes to roofers and accreditation. Texas doesn’t require one, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Most qualified roofers will get accreditation through a roofing contractors association. For example, Honey Bees Roofing & Solar has one through the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association. It takes extra work to get such accreditation. It’s important to hire a contractor with accreditation, as that proves that they know what they’re doing and do good work. If a roofer does a job on your roof, they can actually lose their accreditations. There is definitely a sense of security when you’re using a roofer that has accreditations. Call a Professional What qualifications should a roofer have? A quality roofer will have well done previous roofing projects, an established place of business, and roofing contractors association accreditations. If you need a qualified roofer Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! We offer free roofing inspections so we can help you choose the best roofing option for your home. Remove Dead Tree Limbs From Above Your Home
Roofing, Roofing Maintenance

Remove Dead Tree Limbs From Above Your Home

Trees are beautiful and can complement any house. They provide shade and they even make oxygen. However, over time they require maintenance and care or they can cause problems for your house. Tree limbs can die while still on a tree, making the branches more brittle and prone to breaking. It can be due to disease, storm damage, or even the age of the tree. These dead branches can fall onto your property, doing serious damage. It’s important, as a homeowner, to know how to remove dead tree limbs from above your home. What Can Tree Limbs Do To a Roof? Tree limbs can cause serious havoc to your home if they fall onto your roof. Small and medium tree limbs can puncture your roof, causing holes that will soon be leaking. If a bigger tree branch falls on your home, it can easily cause serious structural damage to your roofing. If the tree limb is big enough it can even cause your home’s roof to collapse. No matter what size branch, you’ll want to avoid them falling onto your roof. How Far Should Tree Branches Be From a House? A good rule of thumb is to keep trees between ten and twenty feet away from your house. At that distance, you may not have to worry about any overhanging branches. However, if you do have branches that hang over your roof or electrical lines, you’ll need to take precautions. Any branches that overhang your roof, or could grow to overhang your roof, require trimming and maintenance. How Can You Remove Dead Tree Limbs From Above Your Home? Cutting down tree limbs makes for hard and potentially dangerous work. The first step is to get thick nylon rope and tie it to the branch you’ll be removing. The number of knots you’ll need to tie on the branch depends on the weight and size of the branch itself. Larger branches will require many knots, while smaller branches will only need one or two. Then, tie the other side of the rope away from the house, anchoring it so the branch will be pulled away from your home. Next, you’ll want to find the branch collar. At the base of the branch, there should be a section of the tree that is thicker than the branch itself. That’s the branch collar. You’ll want to cut the branch on the thinner side of the branch collar, so the tree can properly callous after the trimming. Once you’ve found the right area, and have the branch secured so it won’t crash into your house, you’ll be all set to start cutting. On the smaller side of the branch collar, cut downwards on the branch. Cutting downwards helps prevent the tree from having water set into the wound. If water does set into the tree then the tree can begin to rot. Once the branch is cut, it’ll only be held on by the support rope. You’ll need people on the ground to help pull the branch away from your roof. Once the limb is on the ground, you’re all set! Call a Professional to Remove Dead Tree Limbs From Above Your Home While removing dead tree limbs is doable, it can be easy to mess up and hurt yourself, your property, or the tree in question. It’s also possible to do serious damage to your roofing while pruning and trimming your trees. Your best option is to call a professional who can remove the dead tree limbs for you. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar offers free roofing inspections so you’ll know if you need your tree’s limbs trimmed. If you need a free roof inspection, or just want more information about your roofing, Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131!

What To Do If You’re Missing Shingles
Asphalt Shingles, Roofing

What To Do If You’re Missing Shingles

Roofing acts as a home’s main defense against all forms of weather. Keeping your roof in good shape saves you tons of money in repair and early replacement costs in the long run. As the most common roofing material, shingle roofs experience damage most often. One of the most common repairs for asphalt shingle roofs is missing shingles. When shingles go missing, they create vast problems for the integrity of your roof. But not everyone knows what to do if you’re missing shingles. In this article, we’ll also answer why shingles go missing? And how this common problem impacts your overall roofing structure? How Do Shingles Go Missing? There are many reasons a shingle might go missing. Extreme weather often causes shingles to detach from your roof. For instance, in north Texas winds blow so fiercely that shingles get ripped right off of your roof. Large hailstones can tear shingles, especially if they’re old and worn, causing them to simply slide off. Extreme weather easily represents the biggest threat to your shingle roofing. Unfortunately, weather isn’t the only cause of lost shingles. Older shingle roofing may come apart easier than newer roofing. As your roof approaches the end of its life, missing shingles become a more common occurrence. One final reason you might be missing shingles is poor installation. If the initial installer of your roof missed the nailing zone on your shingles or failed to properly secure roof flashing material, you may be experiencing missing shingles simply because your installer cut corners. What Happens When a Roof Loses Shingles? As we mentioned earlier, asphalt shingles protect your home from damage. Each individual shingle works together with those around it to form a protective, waterproof barrier above your house. If you’re missing shingles, even one, your home’s main defense quite literally has a hole. This hole opens your home to severe damage. With missing shingles, the decking material and main structure of your roof accumulates water damage. Left unnoticed and in disrepair, the damaged decking rots through and water enters the attic and top floors of your home. Additionally, without shingles on your roof, any pre-existing leaks grow more quickly. This causes potentially small repairs to become significantly larger and more costly. What To Do If You’re Missing Shingles? If you think you’re missing shingles or have found an asphalt shingle around your home you should schedule a free roofing inspection. A roofing inspection will either provide peace-of-mind that no problems exist or make you aware of a problem with your roof. Typically, if a roofing contractor finds a problem like a missing shingle, they are able to fix them quickly and cost effectively compared to a full roof replacement. If you’re certain you’re missing shingles, then contact the roof repair experts at Honey Bees Roofing & Solar! We’ll happily come out to your home and replace any shingles that are missing. Are Permits Required for a Roof Replacement?

Are Permits Required for a Roof Replacement?

Owning a home is one of the crowning achievements in life. After you’ve moved in you’ll have to worry about upkeep. Inevitably, you’ll need to replace your roof. While the style and material of your roof are an important decision, you may also keep county permits in mind. A county permit isn’t something you’ll need to choose. However, if you need one and don’t have one it can severely set you back. So, are permits required for a roof replacement? Are Permits Required for a Roof Replacement? If you are replacing or getting a new roof then you do need a permit from your county. Before you start your roof replacement you’ll have to apply for a permit with your county. Without a permit, the county will stop your roofing project, and even possibly heavily fine you. The permits do usually cost money. The price of the permit is different depending on what area you live in. After you pay the fees and send in an application you’ll have to wait to get approved. This can take anywhere from a few days, to a few weeks depending on how busy your county is. After you get your permit you’ll officially be able to start working. Do I Need to Get a Permit if I Hire a Roofer? If you hire a roofing contractor to work on your roof, you shouldn’t need to worry about permits. It’s your roofing contractor’s job to submit applications for the permits, but sometimes things go wrong. Only officially licensed roofing contractors can get permits to work on roofs they don’t own. Checking to see if a contractor has their licensing is a good idea. Also, hiring local can ensure you get a contractor well versed in all the local codes. Local contractors are not only aware of all the local laws but are also already following them. What about Roof Repairs? While you need a permit for roof replacement, you don’t always need one for roof repairs. You typically don’t need a permit to make small repairs. Things like small leaks and replacing shingles are little enough to not need a permit. However, larger repairs may need a permit. The size of the repair is different from county to county. In general, if it’s a small portion of your roof and doesn’t;t need to repair the foundations of your roof you should be fine. Always check local ordinances before starting any work. If you need to replace your roof, you’ll be needing a permit. Large repairs also need a permit. Your county or city will have rules on how big a repair can be before it needs a permit to get done. The best way to make sure you’re following the local ordinances is to hire locally. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar is an expert with the ordinances in Texas. We offer free roofing inspections so you’ll know if your roof damage can be fixed, or if it’ll need to be replaced. Fall Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

Fall Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

The days are getting shorter and the air is getting colder. That can only mean one thing, winter is on its way. Sooner than you think the weather is going to turn. There are only a few months to prepare. With that in mind, we’ve put together some fall maintenance tips to prepare your roof for winter. Why Should I Do Fall Maintenance? Fall and, more importantly, winter both come with serious changes to the weather. The wet and cold combo the darker months bring is the perfect storm for roofing damage. In the wintertime, small issues with your roofing can easily be exacerbated into large problems. The best way to prevent damage to your roof is to get it checked before things can get worse. If you do some fall maintenance then you’re far more likely to have no problems this winter. Fall Maintenance Tips Clear Gutters One of the most important fall maintenance tips to prepare your roof for winter is to make sure your gutters stay clear. During the fall, your gutters can easily fill up with leaves and other debris. When your gutters are full, they can’t properly drain water off of your roof and away from your home. This can easily lead to leaks in your roof or even into your foundation. If you hate cleaning your gutters, consider installing gutter guards to keep debris out of your gutters and keep the flow going. Cut Back Tree Limbs If you have any trees near your house, you’ll want to take a good look at where the limbs hangover. If you have a tree limb over your home, it can do damage to your home. The high winds of winter storms can do enough damage to the tree to have the limb fall off. If that limb falls onto your house it will do a ton of damage. Trimmed trees significantly lower that risk. Get a Free Roof Inspection The best way to prevent damage to your roof this winter is to get a roof inspection. A professional roofer will be able to find any problems with your roof and fix them before they get worse. Things like damaged shingles can turn into major roofing damage. During the winter water can get under the damaged shingles and refreeze, which causes more damage. Over time, your roof will start to leak more and more. A roofing inspection lets you catch the damaged shingles before they can lead to a full-blown leak. Having a free roofing inspection also saves you from trying to get onto the roof and look for yourself. A local roofer’s expertise will be able to catch things you may even miss. During the fall you should absolutely do some maintenance to prepare for the winter weather. If you make sure your gutters are clean, your trees are trimmed, and your roof is in top condition then you’ll be ready for this winter. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar offers free roofing inspections so you’ll know if your roof damage can be fixed, or if it’ll need to be replaced. If you need help with roof repairs or replacement, or just want more information about your roofing, Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131!
