Fall Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

The days are getting shorter and the air is getting colder. That can only mean one thing, winter is on its way. Sooner than you think the weather is going to turn. There are only a few months to prepare. With that in mind, we’ve put together some fall maintenance tips to prepare your roof for winter. Why Should I Do Fall Maintenance? Fall and, more importantly, winter both come with serious changes to the weather. The wet and cold combo the darker months bring is the perfect storm for roofing damage. In the wintertime, small issues with your roofing can easily be exacerbated into large problems. The best way to prevent damage to your roof is to get it checked before things can get worse. If you do some fall maintenance then you’re far more likely to have no problems this winter. Fall Maintenance Tips Clear Gutters One of the most important fall maintenance tips to prepare your roof for winter is to make sure your gutters stay clear. During the fall, your gutters can easily fill up with leaves and other debris. When your gutters are full, they can’t properly drain water off of your roof and away from your home. This can easily lead to leaks in your roof or even into your foundation. If you hate cleaning your gutters, consider installing gutter guards to keep debris out of your gutters and keep the flow going. Cut Back Tree Limbs If you have any trees near your house, you’ll want to take a good look at where the limbs hangover. If you have a tree limb over your home, it can do damage to your home. The high winds of winter storms can do enough damage to the tree to have the limb fall off. If that limb falls onto your house it will do a ton of damage. Trimmed trees significantly lower that risk. Get a Free Roof Inspection The best way to prevent damage to your roof this winter is to get a roof inspection. A professional roofer will be able to find any problems with your roof and fix them before they get worse. Things like damaged shingles can turn into major roofing damage. During the winter water can get under the damaged shingles and refreeze, which causes more damage. Over time, your roof will start to leak more and more. A roofing inspection lets you catch the damaged shingles before they can lead to a full-blown leak. Having a free roofing inspection also saves you from trying to get onto the roof and look for yourself. A local roofer’s expertise will be able to catch things you may even miss. During the fall you should absolutely do some maintenance to prepare for the winter weather. If you make sure your gutters are clean, your trees are trimmed, and your roof is in top condition then you’ll be ready for this winter. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar offers free roofing inspections so you’ll know if your roof damage can be fixed, or if it’ll need to be replaced. How Do Honey Bees Survive the Cold?
Bee Facts

How Do Honey Bees Survive the Cold?

Honey bees are remarkable creatures. They have an unparallel sense of community, as well as a work ethic to aspire towards. However, like most animals, the change of the seasons is what they’re always working towards. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar loves honey bees and wants to share more about these incredible insects. Today we’ll explain how honey bees survive the cold. A Steady Supply Once sugar sources, like nectar from flowers, start to dwindle bees will close up the hive for the winter. The main ingredient to honey bee’s success during the winter is their honey supplies. They spend all year making an excessive amount of honey so they’ll have enough to make it through the winter. If they don’t have enough honey to make it through the winter, the bees will run out of energy and freeze to death. However, bees have been doing this for thousands of years so it’s not a common occurrence. Honey Bee Clusters With a solid amount of honey, and the temperatures dropping, the honey bees close the hive. Then they cluster together around the queen bee and the rest of the brood. The honey bees on the outside of the cluster will start to vibrate their thoraxes. The heat that is given off from the movement is enough to keep the whole colony warm. The bees can also tighten or loosen around the cluster to let more or less air through to keep the ideal temperature all season. Working together the bees can keep the center of the cluster at 93 degrees Fahrenheit. Through the winter the honey bees will slowly move around the hive to eat honey and keep up the vibrations. The honey allows them to stay warm all winter long. What About Bee Keepers? If honey bees need as much honey as they can get to survive the cold, why do beekeepers take their honey? Bees are actually so good at their jobs they typically make more honey than needed over the summer. The average hive can produce more than 200 pounds of honey during the course of a year. Beekeepers can actually take between 30 and 60m pounds of honey without threatening the colony’s ability to survive the winter. To ensure a colony’s survival most bee keepers leave more honey than the bees will need to make it through. By keeping track of how much honey a keeper takes from the bees, they can make sure the colony will be producing honey for years to come. Honey bees survive the harsh cold of winter by using honey as a fuel source to keep the worker bees vibrating for warmth all winter long. At Honey Bees Roofing & Solar, we strive to be like the noble honey bee. By making sure our work is top of the line as well as efficient, we can ensure we’re doing our best to better our local community. The last thing you want your roof to be is damaged. Unfortunately, roofing damage isn’t always possible to avoid. Metal roofing is some of the most durable roofing there is, but even it can be damaged. Typically, the things that can damage metal roofing are extreme weather or installation problems. However, other problems may arise. No matter what happens, you’ll want to repair damage to your roof as quickly as possible. So, you’ll always want to watch for signs of damage to metal roofs. Water Damage If your roof seems to leak, there are quite a few things that could be causing it. One of the main reasons a roof could be leaking is a physical puncture in your roof. Foot traffic on your roof, as well as large or sharp objects, can cause punctures on your roof. They should be fixed as soon as possible. Water damage can spread under your roofing and deal untold destruction to your roof as a whole. Another way that water can damage your metal roof is via dents. On metal roofs, water can pool in any dents. This pooled water can over time rust your metal roofing. A rusted roof leads to many more future problems, as the rust breaks down the metal. Signs of Age Water isn’t the only thing that can make your metal roof rust. Over time, the heat from direct sunlight can break down the protective coating of your roof. Without the coating your roof will more quickly oxidize, which leads to rust. Time break down other components to your roofing. The flashing, for example, can become ineffective over time. Flashing is a metal installed where your roof meets another material, such as a wall or a chimney. The flashing prevents water to leak under your roofing, which causes water damage. Damage to your flashing needs to be fixed as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. Weather can cause damage to your roofing as well. After a few years or even months, the damage can add up, leading to larger problems like leaks. Why Does Dallas, Fort Worth Get So Much Hail?
Hail Damage, Roof Repair, Roofing

Why Does Dallas, Fort Worth Get So Much Hail?

Texas gets a ton of weather. Rain and hail frequent the Lone Star State. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that Texas had the most major hail events in the United States last year. These storms blow through, leaving destruction in their wake. From causing leaks in your roof to making your car look like a golf ball, hail in Texas is no joke. Dallas and Fort Worth seem to be a hail magnet every year. But why does Dallas, Fort Worth, get so much hail? What Causes Hail? We have to understand how hail storms form to understand why Northern Texas gets so much rocky weather. Hailstones form in large cumulonimbus clouds. These are also known as “thunderheads” and are the clouds that makeup thunderstorms.  These clouds hold super-cooled water droplets. These droplets are below the freezing point, but can’t actually freeze until they’re disturbed. Ice crystals form lower in the cloud are pushed upwards from updrafts. These ice crystals collide with the super-cooled water droplets and freeze them, which creates hailstones. Once the hailstones get too heavy for the updrafts to hold, they fall towards the earth to cause havoc. However, if the updrafts are strong enough, the hailstones will stay suspended in the clod of water droplets. They’ll grow larger, and larger until they’re too heavy. That’s how you get baseball, or even softball, sized hailstones. Why Dallas, Fort Worth? Northern Dallas gets a boat-load of rain, which is the quickest way to get hail. The Gulf Coast provides plenty of moisture for fairly consistent rain. That, coupled with the variation in temperatures causes more thunderstorms. Then, with more thunderstorms, and bigger thunderheads, you get more hail. The Dallas, Fort Worth area is the perfect melting pot for hail. Because of these perfect storm conditions, roofing in Dallas and Fort Worth have a shortened lifespan and should be inspected after every major storm. Repairing storm damage quickly after a storm is essential, especially since you do have a time limit to make an insurance claim. Prepare Before The Storm While hail storms are inevitable, you can prepare for them to mitigate damage to your property. Try to bring in anything you can. This would include things like your car, lawn furniture, and anything else typically left outside. Also, trim back the branches on any trees. Cutting back foliage so that it won’t crash into your home if anything breaks off can help prevent any major damage. Checking your gutters can also help since full gutters can lead to water damage to your home. Storm damage may go unnoticed but can lead to more damage down the road. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar offers free roofing inspections so you’ll know if your roof is damaged and needs to be fixed. If you think you might have any storm damage, or need more tips on prepping your home for hail, Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! Can You Install Solar on a Tile Roof?

The benefits of solar panels are numerous. Every year, more and more households install solar onto their homes to make their own energy. Most solar panels are installed on asphalt shingle roofing. However, that’s because asphalt shingle roofing is the most common. Installing solar panels on more uncommon roofing, like tile roofing, may be seen less frequently. You may be thinking, can you install solar on a tile roof? Can You Install Solar on a Tile Roof? The simplest answer to this question is yes you can! The process is different than putting solar on an asphalt shingle roof. On a shingle roof, you have a pretty easy installation process. You would start by installing the brackets into the roof. Then, you’d simply need to seal the wholes and add flashing to prevent leaking. With the brackets installed you’d simply put up the solar panels. However, tile roofing is a bit different. Because of the fact you can’t just drill into the tiles, tiles need to be removed. You’ll want a trusted professional to make sure they don’t do any damage to the tiles when removing them. You can then install the brackets like normal. Special hooks can be added instead of brackets as an alternative mounting device. However, to add the tiles back you may need to drill into them. But, not all homeowners need the older tiles replaced, it isn’t often noticeable. Either way, sealant, and flashing are added to prevent leakage. Benefits of Solar on a Tile Roof Tile roofing is unique. It gives you a beautiful roof that is made with an ancient technique, modernized to last for years and years. Not only aesthetically, but it has a unique ability to permit airflow under the tiles which makes them energy efficient. Tile roofing can also easily be pulverized and recycled after being removed from a roof. When you pair that with solar panels you’ll have an incredibly environmentally friendly roof. That’s on top of the lowered energy bills due to the solar panels making energy for your house to use. You’ll also get to benefit from numerous tax benefits available to Texans. Call a Professional You can install solar panels on a tile roof. The installation is more difficult than asphalt roofs, but the benefits are numerous. Tile roofing is highly durable and can outlast solar panels, making them a perfect match. How Long Does A Roof Last?
Roof Replacement, Roofing

How Long Does a Roof Last?

Your roof is one of the most important pieces of your home. It protects you, your family, as well as all of your things. Making sure it is in working shape is important. Unfortunately, most things have an expiration date and your roof is no different. Honey Bees Roofing & Solar has the answer to the pressing question, how long does a roof last? Material Matters The main factor that affects when a roof needs to be replaced is what that roof is made out of. Not all materials are created equal, and some roofing can last longer than others. When you’re replacing your roof, keep in mind what materials may last longer so you can get the most out of your roof! Asphalt Shingle Roofing The most popular roofing material is asphalt shingles. They are versatile, come in many colors, are relatively easy to repair, and are typically the least expensive option. However, asphalt shingles tend to have the lowest lifespan of any roofing. Asphalt shingles can last between 12 and 20 years, on average. If there are any major weather events or disasters then it can seriously hamper the longevity of your roof. Metal Roofing Metal roofing is becoming more and more popular each year. Typically made of aluminum, metal roofing also comes in a variety of colors and styles. However, metal roofing tends to be more expensive than asphalt shingles. Metal roofing can last anywhere from 40 to even 70 years with proper care. Many metal roofs come with a 30-50 year warranty to ensure longevity! The strength of metal helps metal roofing stand the test of time. Tile Roofing Tile roofing is a unique and gorgeous option found all over the Dallas, Fort Worth area. They are long-lasting and have lasted over one hundred years on some buildings. Many manufacturers have warranties for tile roofing. These are usually 30-year warranties, but some manufacturers have offered lifetime warranties for tile roofing. By taking care of your tile roofing, they can last a lifetime. Signs You Need to Replace Your Roof Your roof can take a beating, but at a certain point, it’ll need replacing. Damage to your roofing can quickly lead to needing a new roof. Proper maintenance, like roofing repairs and cleaning your gutters, will improve the lifespan of your roof. Leaks and water damage can wear down a roof from the inside. That leads to mold and will destroy the structural integrity of your roof.  If your roof is sagging, you definitely need a new roof immediately. Major damage from extreme weather or disasters will also require roof replacements. How long does a roof last? Anywhere between 12 and 70 years, depending on your roof’s material and the care it receives. The best way to get the most life out of your roof is through routine maintenance. What is Autism
Autism Support

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disability that is typically diagnosed at a young age. It sticks with someone their entire life and can provide challenges to a person’s social skills and behaviors. It’s estimated that 1 in 54 individuals are on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, and it is more frequent in boys than girls. While it is a fairly common disorder, people seem to not know a whole lot about what autism is. In helping to support autism awareness, we’ve put together some information to answer the question “What is Autism?” Diagnosis of ASD Autism spectrum disorder can be difficult to diagnose since there is no medical test to see if someone is on the spectrum. A doctor has to watch an individual’s behavior to be able to diagnose them.  Autism can usually be identified early in life, with diagnoses being considered reliable around the age of two. However, diagnosis can be difficult since autism has so many varied characteristics. Undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder can make it difficult for someone to get proper help. Early signs of autism spectrum disorder should be watched for. Also, watching out for important milestones in a child’s development helps make sure ASD doesn’t go unnoticed. Characteristics of Autism The symptoms of autism spectrum disorder are many. However, they can usually be put into two categories, social interaction/communication problems, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. Autism spectrum disorder affects the brain in such a way that social interaction can be difficult. Someone with autism spectrum disorder may find difficulties in communicating and interacting with other people. They may also struggle with understanding how others feel. An individual with autism spectrum disorder may also respond extremely to different sensory effects. Things like loud noises, bright, flashing lights, or even the way specific things feel may make them stressed or uncomfortable. Another typical characteristic is doing the same thing repeatedly. Things like playing with the same part of a toy, or being incredibly interested in one niche thing can also be a symptom. ASD is not an Illness One of the most important things to know about autism spectrum disorder is that it isn’t an illness. Someone with autism spectrum disorder has a brain that works differently compared to others. It typically occurs during childhood and doesn’t ever go away. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder just need support and love from those around them. It’s not clear what causes autism, but it isn’t something that you need to worry about. The most important thing you can do is try to understand and support those around you. Raising a child with autism spectrum disorder and understanding autism spectrum disorder may seem difficult, but it is a worthwhile journey. If you want to contact a local parent with a child that has been diagnosed with ASD in the Burleson area, contact our founder Daniel at daniel@honeybeesroofing.com or fill out our contact form. Energy Efficient Roofing Options

Your roofing is the first line of defense for your home. The roof protects you and your family from rain, hail, and even the sun. However, not all roofing is a barrier against the weather and helps keep your energy bills low. A “cool roof” is a roof that is energy efficient, by reflecting sunlight and absorbing less heat. When you have a cool roof on your home you’ll keep your home more comfortable in the summer months, lowering the need for air conditioning. Also, decreasing the temperature your roofing gets to it can extend the life of your roof. There are multiple energy-efficient roofing options for your home to choose from, which gives you the ability to make the best choice for your home. Metal Roofing Metal roofing is one of the best options for any home. It has amazing resistance to weather, holding up against the worst mother nature can throw at it. Metal roofing is also fireproof. Its lightweight can also reduce stress to a home’s foundation. Metal roofing lasts between forty and seventy years! Most metal roofing is aluminum, which can be recycled indefinitely. It also is highly energy-efficient and has been found to reduce cooling costs up to 25%. Metal roofing is available in many styles to maximize your home’s curb appeal. Tile Roofing Tile roofing is one of the most unique styles of roofing. Not only is it gorgeous, but also allows air to circulate under the tiles. The extra airflow makes tile roofing energy efficient during the warm and cold seasons. Tiles are also resistant to weather, but not quite as resistant as metal roofing. Tile roofing has an incredibly long lifespan, upwards of fifty years! The styles and colors tile roofing comes in are massively varied as well. Asphalt Shingle Roofing Asphalt roof shingles can be energy efficient, but not all shingles are created equal. Energy-efficient roofing shingles have special granules that help reflect sunlight and prevent heat absorption. The difference between the shingles with the special granules vs those without is major. Without the special coating, the shingles can have a temperature difference of one hundred degrees Fahrenheit compared to the energy-efficient shingles. That’s on the surface of your roof, but the temperature difference can be felt inside the home. Energy-efficient asphalt shingles can be the most cost-effective option for a cool roof. They’re durable, being resistant to weather and fire. Roofing shingles come in all kinds of styles to accentuate your home. They are also some of the easiest, and most common, roofing systems to install. However, they usually need to be replaced after around twenty-five years, less than tile or metal roofing. Call a Professional Your roof is one of the most important and long-lasting aspects of your home. Choosing one of these energy-efficient roofing options will save you money for years to come. No matter what you choose, shingles, metal, or tile, make sure it’s a choice that you’ll love. If you’re looking to put up an energy-efficient roof for your home Contact Honey Bees Roofing & Solar online or give us a call today at 817-668-6131! We’ll help you with your roofing decision and be by your side for the entire service.
